Laid out over low lying coastal terrain, the Laguna boasts many water hazards and few trees, so is considerably different from the other Vilamoura courses. The direct route to the green includes an umbrella pine plus a front bunker. Three more sand traps guard the left side of the putting surface. A wonderful, scenic hole.

Hawtree, part of the famous three generations of golf course architects, also designed Pine Cliffs — whose bright orange cliffs are one of the best known sights in the world of golf. Built in a pinewood setting, with tree-lined fairways running parallel along the Atlantic Ocean, this stunning nine-hole course allows golfers to drink in breathtaking views along the Algarve coastline. Hawtree has worked wonders in maintaining the natural surroundings while also making this a proper test of golf.

A huge driving range and lots of target greens and two short-game areas make it popular with golf schools from the UK. The list of architects to have. And at Vila Sol we find the work of another respected and lauded designer, Donald Steel. Steel has worked on all the Open Championship venues and in this corner of Portugal he has created three fabulous loops of nine. All finish in front of a stylish and welcoming clubhouse — one of the most tranquil and pleasant experiences in the Algarve.

If you can resist a refreshment here after stepping off the last green, you must have forgotten your wallet! Weaving between mature trees and with frequent elevation changes, you are constantly thinking at Vila Sol. On the first loop, four large lakes make you think a little more frantically And throughout, there are some wickedly undulating greens, all manicured beautifully and running quick and true.

The Ocean and Royal courses. The course can bite you but you never get angry at it. To score well you have to be accurate but you can get it round nicely with a good short game. The Ocean course features undulating fairways which run alongside a nature reserve, before leading gently down to the shores of the Atlantic. Its signature holes are two spectacular par 4s — the 11th and the 14th — which treat golfers to some of the most stunning views in the Algarve. The par-3 15th — which runs alongside the beach — is also world class.

The Royal is characterised by fairways rolling through stretches of pine and beautiful lakes surrounded by wild flowers. Its other feature hole is the short 9th, whose green is virtually an island. Elevated tees give you the chance to open your shoulders but the fairways are not as wide as elsewhere on the Algarve and there is a good deal of water around.

Lee sculpted this outstanding course in and his design takes advantage of wonderful topography, winding its way gently over undulating pine woodland. Bordering the salt water lagoons, San Lorenzo is laid out in a figure of eight and at the heart lies a handsome clubhouse. The stretch from the 5th to the 8th is especially good, taking in elevated drives and magnificent views with the 8th a spectacular par 5. It borders the largest of the inland lakes and forces the third shot to carry water to a tight but beautifully positioned green.

With the lake to your right, the tendency is to favour the left side; however, caution is necessary as bunkers and encroaching pines lie and wait on this side. Not many complexes offer three fine courses but historic Quinta do Lago is one. Joining the likes of Wentworth and Gleneagles, all three of its.

It might have been the third course to open at Quinta do Lago but the Laranjal track is far from the weak younger sibling. Originally an orange grove, it is now a beautiful golf experience where narrow fairways lined by umbrella pines, cork-oaks and orange trees as well as sculpted greens require concentration and accuracy to tame its distinctive terrain. The first five and the last four holes on the Norte, or North, layout were devised by American William Mitchell on sandy ground littered with umbrella pines trees.

In the spring, the rough is covered with a blanket of wild flowers, heather and gorse. The bunkering is distinctive and penal, more so than elsewhere in the Algarve with the lakes on holes 12 to 18 claiming many victims. The 14th just might be the outstanding hole on the course. It may be in the shadows of the star-studded Centre and West, but there are three hidden gems waiting to be discovered here.

The East might well become the next key area in the Algarve if golfers are seeking a peaceful experience away from the big names and the bright lights. There is certainly little to dislike about this combination; excellent courses, a less crowded start-sheet and sub-four hour rounds.

Benamor was completed in the spring of and from the foothills of Barrocal, you will enjoy some of the best mountain and sea views the Algarve as to offer. It opens up with a lovely hole which finishes with an acute dogleg and a green guarded by two bunkers. The 1st sets the tone for this pleasant round.

Water appears only aesthetically on the front nine but takes its revenge on the 10th, with hazards waiting to snap up anything loose on either side of the fairway. There is even more of it on the 13th as water splits the.

Next to Castro Marim, where there are three loops of nine — the Atlantic, the Guadiana and the Grouse — at the luxury development. With great views the course was designed to offer the maximum pleasure to all levels of golfers. Lakes, undulating fairways and elevated greens make this a delightful inland challenge. Get there quickly I always want golf to be fun. The lakes first come into play on the drive off the 5th tee, where a slice or even just a slight push will end up wet.

The approach shot to the 9th green must not draw too much or again you will be having to reload. Fast and true greens, several of them elevated and protected by bunkers, inviting elevated tees and dogleg fairways carved out of canyons are features of the courses. The Grouse is the newest of the three nine holes and has more open, far-reaching inland hill views. Although it only opened in it is already nicely mature.

It has rolling terrain with fewer trees than the other two courses. Last, but by no means least, to Quinto do Vale, where the legacy of the late, great Severiano Ballesteros lives on. Quinta do Vale features an 18hole championship layout of perfect symmetry; six par 5s, six par 4s and six par 3s.

So there are opportunities to make birdies with a third of the course long three-shotters. Marvellously integrated in the landscape and with a luxurious view over the Guadiana River, the course sits into a natural valley always overlooked from the clubhouse. But the Algarve Tourism Association has teamed up with Jet2. For more information, visit www. Visit www. The opening hole, a testing yard par 4 off the back tees to a raised green fronted by three deep bunkers is pleasing yet gives no idea of the wonders that are yet to come. You get that on the 2nd tee, so there is not long to wait.

The most southerly area of Spain has more world-class courses than exist in the whole of most countries.

They are some of the best-known courses in Europe, names such as Valderrama, San Roque and Sotogrande. Let us begin our tour of Spain here, as we try to break down the myriad options in this country of courses to give you an informed choice for your next break. Valderrama is the most famous course in Spain by some distance after it hosted the Ryder Cup in as well as several Tour events.

Another Trent Jones creation, Sotogrande Old, is now too short — at less than 6, yards — to test Tour players — but it remains a brilliant venue for the rest of us — and arguably superior technically to neighbouring Valderrama. La Reserva is a new kid on the block in Sotogrande after being opened in At nearly 7, yards it is a big, bold track and American in style designed by Cabell Robinson with generous, undulating fairways and heavily-bunkered greens.

Robinson is also the man behind the new course of Finca Cortesin. At over 7, yards off the tips, the home of the Volvo World Matchplay Championship is one of the longest courses in Europe. Robinson also laid out Santana, in a former avocado plantation, near Malaga while nearby Torrequebrada is a real unsung hero of the Costa del Sol. Soon after working on Sotogrande, Trent Jones worked on Las Brisas, located to the west of Marbella and just a couple of miles.

Dye moulded the contours of the hills into an enjoyable test for scratch players as well as higher handicappers. Lovely views to the Guadalquiton River and the Mediterranean Sea ease any pain hacking about in the cork oaks.

Also in and around Marbella there is Los Naranjos, next to Las Brisas — which has generous fairways, lots of water, mature palm trees and slick greens — plus Mijas, whose Los Lagos course opened in when Trent Jones was prolific in the area. Both nines finish with fabulous, lakeside holes. Nine lakes and 90 bunkers mean it is no stroll. In Santander in the north for example, you can expect the sun on your back from April to the middle of September with an average of at least six hours of sunshine.

Take note, though, that only June and July guarantee relatively rain-free months. In the south, Almeria has, for example, nine hours of sunshine from April to September and very little rain from the middle of April until October. The courses in the Canaries benefit from year-round sunshine and at just four hours away by plane are fantastic winter options.

WHEN TO GO In the middle of summer, it is uncomfortably hot in the middle of the day so if you head off in these months be prepared to play early or late afternoon. That is, however, arguably the best time to play in the Canaries. Their courses are packed in the winter see above for reason why but go in the summer and you will or at least you should breeze round in four hours. Just remember to play early or late in the day. Two courses at Marriott Son Antem are excellent resort golf. Pedrena, in Cantabria, is a Harry Colt design from which is most famous for being where Seve learnt the game. Ulzama in Pamplona was laid out by Arana and is found on hilly terrain in an old oak forest and, unusually for Spain, you must deal with blind shots now and again.

Old pals Angel Gallardo and Neil Coles have worked cleverly to route it impressively on difficult terrain. The result is an abundance of elevated tees, sweeping downhill holes and breathtaking panoramic views. There is also not a weak hole and you even get the occasional glimpse of the Pyrenees. El Prat is another star-studded course near Barcelona, Greg Norman and Alfonso Viador placing a great emphasis on the spectacular.

Here are 10 of the most common side games, or friendly wagers, in golf. For many more betting games , plus more in-depth explanations, see our Glossary of Golf Tournament Formats and Betting Games. The Nassau is three bets in one: low score on the front nine , low score on the back nine and low score over the full Win a hole, win a set amount of money from your buddies. Skins games are quite simple at base, but the value of holes can increase if those competing halve a series of holes because the value carries over, causing the pot to build.

Round Robin, also known as Hollywood or Sixes, is a betting game for groups of four that involves two members of the group teaming up against the other two. The catch is that partners rotate every six holes. It's actually a compilation of lots of little bets—things such as birdies , long drive on a hole, closest to the pin on a hole are worth positive points; things such as double bogeys and hitting into water subtract points.

Each point is worth a set amount. Add up the points at the end of the round and pay up. Some groups wind up with literally dozens of things—barkies, sandies , Arnies, etc. Bingo Bango Bongo awards points throughout the round for three different accomplishments: hitting the green first, being closest to the pin once all balls are on the green , and being first to ho le out.

At the end of the round, points are totaled and the differences are paid out. It's also a common tournament format for association playdays. Wolf is one of the classic golf betting games for groups of four, but it gets a little complicated. Players rotate as the "Wolf. If the Wolf chooses 2-vs. But the Wolf can win or lose more money by going it alone. There's a game similar to Wolf called Defender that works well for groups of three. Las Vegas is a game for teams of two players each.

Each golfer on a side plays his own ball, and the two scores are combined on each hole. Not added together, but strung together. For example, the scores of one side are 4 and 5, so the team score is Set a money value for each point. Bets can be placed on the outcome of each match and on the aggregate of the three.

Each player Is aiming to be on the winning side in at least two of the three matches. If you lose all three matches, it can usually get expensive! This is an imaginative game that is great for allowing weaker players and even beginners an opportunity to take points and dollars from more experienced competitors. With so many point-scoring opportunities, the game can generate considerable enthusiasm. But more introverted players should be reassured that it is not necessary, or at more exclusive clubs even permissible, to shout out the words themselves.

The great thing about this game is that the total score on a hole is irrelevant to the winning of points. This helps players with a weaker tee to the green game can still compete. If their final shot to the green is just a short chip shot, they may still have a good chance of being closest to the pin and scoring Bango.

Likewise, any player may from time to time see a longish putt drop in and score Bongo. For this reason, the game is a popular choice for association and society days, but it can also be played alongside more conventional stroke and match play formats if desired. The rules for this game are simple which is nice because some of the most popular ones require a lot of math and post-round calculations.

As you can tell, most of these betting methods are geared toward two or four players. This is not so much a game in its own right, but a way of describing a number of minor or side bets which can be added to any conventional golfing contest or to all the other games. The dot game is a way to keep track of all the action Iike a bookie in Vegas.

These may be simple and obvious, such as points or dollars won for birdie, eagle, longest drive, sand saves, or closest to the pin on par 3 holes. Points can also be lost for bogey, double bogey, out of bounds, etc.

But many more bets have been devised, and perhaps made more appealing by the creative and intriguing names by which they are known. Another fun way to keep your betting interesting is the quota system. This system features a set amount of money you can win before heading to the first box.

I love this game because it rewards consistent play with pars and really rewards if you make birdies or even an eagle. Plus, the rules are simple! Are you looking for a betting game that emphasizes putting more than the total score? To make it interesting, you can also create a progression system so three putts later in the round cost more money. If you keep doubling, this can add up! Also, make sure the pot amounts and rules are clear before teeing off so everyone is on the same page.

If you have a regular foursome, it can make gambling and golfing even more fun. An almost infinite variety of forfeits have also been devised to penalize other errors such as hitting out of bounds, hitting houses and even air shots. As with every game mentioned, make sure the rules and payouts are clear for any newcomers as well. This betting system is ideal for hardcore gamblers who are ready to win big or lose big.

Overall, this is a great game for golfers who have a lot of ups and downs and also those who just love gambling on the links. When you break it down, it gets pretty fun too. Think about it like this; if you make back-to-back birdies without banking, you will have earned the equivalent of making 18 bogeys earned at 5 points each. Click here to read about more different types of golf games.

But in case you get the impression that all golfers are inveterate gamblers, addicted to risking large sums on essentially random events, remember that many of these games are in reality no more than imaginative scoring systems. The best of them allows weaker players to enjoy an element of competition and level the playing field in ways which the conventional handicapping system does not always achieve.

And of course, there is no need for any of these games to be played for high stakes. You can bet a sleeve of balls, drinks, mildly embarrassing forfeits or there may be no bets at all if the players prefer. All that really matters is that all participants are comfortable with both the game and the stakes they are playing for. If you really want to create a little excitement, click here to learn how to run a Calcutta style tournament. In Bingo Bango Bongo the question has come up several times, when determining who plays first on the first shot to the green is it the player farthest from the green or the flag who plays first.

My groups always go with farthest from the flag. I think everyone should play bingo Bango bongo and also play ready golf put an extra 54 to each green fee for the prize and watch those 18 hole rounds finish up in 3 hours Cheers The breeze. We play a golf game in Thailand which can be played with 4 or 5 players. Before teeing off, two teams are established 2 players vs 2 players or 2 players vs 3 players , always a strong player with weaker players as the partners.

Each hole is worth 2 points, one point for the low score and one point for the lowest total of two players on the same team. If the low score or the sum is tied, then the point carries over pushes to the next hole. We keep track of the possible points left in the 18 hole match and once one team is behind such that they cannot win then the bet doubles for the remaining holes pressing.

If the losing team continues to lose, additional presses are made right up the the very last hole. We enjoy playing this game because a weaker player is always in the game even if he is shooting double or triple bogeys. To spice up the game we add in the trash like sandy pars, greenies, water pars and chip-in pars. Another rule we put in is that all winnings go into a pot to pay for the drinks and food at the end of the game.

My brother and I play a variation on the Wolf Game. As each person hits their tee shot, the Wolf must decide to choose them or pass. This creates pressure, and sometime forces a Lone Wolf situation. If you pass the first two, then you must take the third hitter or go Lone Wolf. Your email address will not be published. Over 10, golfers already enjoy our newsletter.
