Before buying a stock for its income, we want to see if the dividends have been stable in the past, and if the company has a track record of maintaining its dividend.
For the purpose of this article, we only scrutinise the last decade of Metcash's dividend payments. Its dividend payments have declined on at least one occasion over the past ten years. The dividend has shrunk at around 5. Metcash's dividend has been cut sharply at least once, so it hasn't fallen by 5. When a company's per-share dividend falls we question if this reflects poorly on either external business conditions, or the company's capital allocation decisions.
Either way, we find it hard to get excited about a company with a declining dividend. Given that dividend payments have been shrinking like a glacier in a warming world, we need to check if there are some bright spots on the horizon. At the right price, we might be interested. Dividend investors should always want to know if a a company's dividends are affordable, b if there is a track record of consistent payments, and c if the dividend is capable of growing. We're a bit uncomfortable with the company paying a dividend while being loss-making, although at least the dividend was covered by free cash flow.
Next, earnings growth has been good, but unfortunately the dividend has been cut at least once in the past. Ultimately, Metcash comes up short on our dividend analysis. It's not that we think it is a bad company - just that there are likely more appealing dividend prospects out there on this analysis.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
For instance, we've picked out 1 warning sign for Metcash that investors should take into consideration. Warren Buffett is scooping up stocks. Berkshire Hathaway ticker: BRK. A, BRK. Here are eight stocks Warren Buffett has been buying. Bloomberg -- Now that President-elect Joe Biden has picked Janet Yellen as his Treasury secretary, currency markets are growing more confident that the U. Yellen is seen returning clarity on the U.
Some traders are hopeful even though the former Federal Reserve chair and her new boss, Biden, are expected to take time to unfold their position on the greenback as they focus initially on fighting the pandemic and its economic damage. Her experience and knowledge could see a better, formal setting around dollar policy. Treasury secretary has historically been in charge of the dollar, with a unit in the department dedicated to foreign exchange policy.
But tradition went by the wayside under Trump. Within hours of each other, Kudlow said in a television interview that the administration had decided not to intervene, only to have Trump tell reporters that the idea was still under consideration. Yellen has in the past noted that a stronger dollar exacerbates the U. She also in warned her then-Fed colleagues about the risks of commenting on the dollar. Any policy changes under Yellen would coincide with growing consensus on Wall Street that the dollar has entered a period of prolonged weakness.
Not everyone agrees Yellen will make strong pronouncements on dollar policy, since her focus will be on the domestic economy. Nine months into the pandemic, more than 6 million people still claim extended unemployment assistance and joblessness is again on the rise as U. Tesla and Nikola rose while Chinese electric car stocks gave up gains as the Trump administration finally started the transition process. Which stocks are either a fan favorite or a must-avoid?
Penny stocks. These names are too appealing for the risk-tolerant investor to ignore. Given the low prices, you get more for your money. On top of this, even minor share price appreciation can translate to massive percentage gains, and thus, major returns for investors. However, there is a but here. The critics point out that there could be a reason for the bargain price tag, whether it be poor fundamentals or overpowering headwinds.
So, how are investors supposed to determine which penny stocks are poised to make it big? Following the activity of the investing titans is one strategy. Enter billionaire Steven Cohen. February 25, Conclusion To dividend reinvest or not to dividend reinvest? It depends on your circumstance but don't make the mistake of blithely signing a DRP for every share ever time; it may seem convenient but you need to ask yourself: Would I buy these shares?
The money or the stocks? By Scott Francis. This time of year is a nice reminder of one of the key benefits of owning Australian shares: the income and franking credits that start to roll in. In a time of significant volatility in sharemarket values, it is nice to remember this key benefit of owning shares: potential exposure to a growing and tax advantaged income stream.
Many companies offer a "dividend reinvestment plan", where rather than take dividends as income, the investor can choose to take the dividend as more shares. This article compares the two ways of receiving income; should you take income as dividends or as extra shares? Right from the start, however, it should be noted that this is not a crucial investment decision. Deciding to dividend reinvest or not will not be the difference between a retirement of lobster and first-class travel, or one of Spam and travel limited to the odd shuffle around the block.
My own leaning is to take dividends as cash, but there are arguments both ways and we start by looking at the arguments for dividend reinvestment. To find out which Top companies offer a dividend reinvestment program, see the table below.
Before we do that, I just wanted to clarify one misconception that I occasionally come across with dividend reinvestment, the idea that dividends are not taxable when taken as part of a dividend reinvestment program. This is not correct. The dividend is taxable as income whether it is taken as cash or dividend reinvested.
There is no difference here at all. The case for dividend reinvestment The first argument is the no-brokerage argument. I have never seen a dividend reinvestment scheme that charges brokerage, and therefore it is a cheap way of buying additional shares. This could be particularly attractive if you have a small parcel of share that you wish to grow over time. The second argument is that shares in a dividend reinvestment program are sometimes issued at a small discount to the market price.
There is an attraction in buying an asset at less than market price. Third is the reinvesting-for-growth argument. Long-term investors looking to grow the value of their investments over time might regard capital growth as far more important than dividends.
Therefore dividend reinvesting - where they are actually buying more units every six or 12 months - helps meet that goal. The case against dividend reinvestment The number one issue that I see against dividend reinvestment is that you forfeit your ability to control the timing and price of your investment.
Opting into a dividend reinvestment programs is to say that at the time the dividend is paid you will be happy that the best investment option available is the company you are dividend-reinvesting with, at the price set by the program. I would certainly not argue against reinvesting the dividend into your portfolio; rather I would argue against giving up the control that you do by investing through a dividend reinvestment program. The "balance of the dividend" argument is another against dividend reinvestment.
When a dividend is received, you will receive a number of shares. However, the amount of the dividend will not exactly equal the number of shares. There is another twist here. Telstra's Summary of the Dividend Reinvestment Plan document says if Telstra's dividend reinvestment plan is cancelled or suspended at any time, "the company will donate any residual balance at the time
